At the Prostate Cancer Institute of Arizona, cancer treatment specialist Ajay Bhatnagar, MD, provides high-quality prostate cancer care to men in Chandler, Arizona, and throughout Maricopa County.

Dr. Bhatnagar was born in London but spent most of his childhood in Pennsylvania. He earned his undergraduate degree in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, graduating magna cum laude.

Dr. Bhatnagar obtained his medical degree and master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Before entering private practice, he completed postgraduate medical training in Radiation Oncology: University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2023, Dr. Bhatnagar was selected as an honored member of the Nationwide Registries Top Doctors of America Honors Edition.

Dr. Bhatnagar brings more than 20 years of experience to the Prostate Cancer Institute of Arizona –– the only practice in the state that exclusively focuses on low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy. This treatment for men with localized prostate cancer (cancer that hasn’t spread beyond the prostate) is one of the most effective treatments when considering cure rates, side effects, and treatment duration. Dr. Bhatnagar was also nominated to 2023 America’s Best Doctors.

Men from all over visit Dr. Bhatnagar to receive treatment for prostate cancer with Low Dose Rate (LDR) brachytherapy, including focal brachytherapy and rectal spacing (a procedure that protects the rectum and surrounding tissues from radiation).

Dr. Bhatnagar uses the latest technology, including the Theraseed® Pd-103 radioactive seed offered by Becton Dickinson and Theragenics, Cs-131 radioactive seed offered by Perspective Therapeutics, and rectal spacing with Barrigel®, the only rectal spacer that allows sculpting. Dr. Bhatnagar also uses real-time treatment planning during his brachytherapy cases which results in the most precise and accurate procedure.

When he isn’t meeting with patients, developing treatment plans, or completing surgery, Dr. Bhatnagar enjoys enhancing his professional skills. He serves on the board of the Arizona Medical Association, is a consultant to the Arizona Medical Board, and is a member of the American Brachytherapy Society.

My husband's urologist recommended to either remove the prostate or have traditional radiation. Both of which have long recovery times. He is very active so he looked at other options. He had been told by men that have had the Brachytherapy to reach out to Prostate Cancer Institute. His PSA was 18 so he made the decision to have the Brachytherapy. His down time was 2 days! Thanks also to the urologist Dr. Biren Patel who assisted in the Brachytherapy procedure. We had a good follow up appointment. The team approach with both my Urologist Dr Jaffee and Dr. Bhatnagar’s excellent team working together to focus on my needs. Very friendly professional staff that catered to my needs, both clinically and administratively. I felt like I was there only patient.
