What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer causes the cells in the prostate gland to multiply and divide uncontrollably. There are different types of prostate cancer. At PCIA, we specialize in the treatment of localized prostate cancer.

Early stage prostate cancer often has no symptoms. Most men present with an elevated Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test.  Others may have an abnormal digital rectal exam by their doctor. Prostate cancer is diagnosed with a biopsy conducted by a Urologist. As the cancer worsens, you can experience:

  • Trouble urinating
  • Decreased force in the stream of urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Blood in the semen

An ultrasound or an MRI may be used to examine the prostate gland and surrounding tissues.

What is prostate brachytherapy?

PCIA is the only national practice that specializes in the use of Low Dose rate (LDR) Prostate Brachytherapy for the treatment of localized prostate cancer.  This unique treatment requires only one visit and takes less than one hour.

LDR Brachytherapy isn’t offered at most cancer centers and we are proud to provide this vital therapy. It’s a highly skilled procedure that yields much higher erectile function preservation rates than alternative procedures like surgery and external beam radiation therapy.

The procedure is done with general anesthesia, causing you to sleep. Using ultrasound guidance, the prostate gland is visualized. Using real-time, AI assisted planning, a radiation plan is generated. Radiative seeds are deposited in set positions within the prostate gland. These seeds emit a low dose of radiation over a period and then become inert. A hydrogel is then placed between the prostate and rectum to protect the rectum from radiation.  Once this is complete, the patient is moved to the recovery room, and he goes home shortly thereafter.

What is recovery like after prostate brachytherapy?

After prostate brachytherapy, you need someone to drive you home. After resting for the rest of the day, most men are able to resume normal activity the next day.
