Colorado

Colorado, located in the Rocky Mountain region, boasts a diverse landscape, encompassing mountains, plains, and plateaus. Historically, it played a crucial role in the mid-19th-century Gold Rush and later became a hub for the skiing and outdoor recreation industry.

In recent years, Colorado has experienced substantial population growth, driven by factors such as a robust economy, quality of life, and a thriving cultural scene. Cities like Denver and Boulder have emerged as tech and innovation hubs, attracting a young and dynamic population.

Prostate cancer is a significant health concern in Colorado, prompting heightened awareness and proactive healthcare initiatives. The state actively engages in research, diagnosis, and treatment strategies, with organizations like the Colorado Prostate Cancer Coalition leading efforts. Educational campaigns encourage regular screenings, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the disease. Colorado’s diverse healthcare landscape emphasizes equitable access to information and services for all communities. As the state continues to address health challenges, collaborative endeavors strive to enhance early detection and improve outcomes for individuals impacted by prostate cancer.

Meet Your Physician

At the Prostate Cancer Institute of Colorado, cancer treatment specialist Ajay Bhatnagar, MD, provides high-quality prostate cancer care to men throughout the state.

Dr. Bhatnagar was born in London but spent most of his childhood in Pennsylvania. He earned his undergraduate degree in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, graduating magna cum laude.

Dr. Bhatnagar obtained his medical degree and master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from the University of Pittsburgh. Before entering private practice, he completed postgraduate medical training in Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2023, Dr. Bhatnagar was selected as an honored member of the Nationwide Registries Top Doctors of America Honors Edition.

Dr. Bhatnagar brings more than 20 years of experience to the Prostate Cancer Institute of Arizona –– the only practice in the state that exclusively focuses on low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy. This treatment for men with localized prostate cancer (cancer that hasn’t spread beyond the prostate) is one of the most effective treatments when considering cure rates, side effects, and treatment duration.

Men from all over visit Dr. Bhatnagar to receive treatment for prostate cancer with Low Dose Rate (LDR) brachytherapy, including focal brachytherapy and rectal spacing (a procedure that protects the rectum and surrounding tissues from radiation).

Dr. Bhatnagar uses the latest technology, including the Theraseed® Pd-103 radioactive seed offered by Becton Dickinson and Theragenics, Cs-131 radioactive seed offered by Perspective Therapeutics, and rectal spacing with Barrigel®, the only rectal spacer that allows sculpting. Dr. Bhatnagar also uses real-time treatment planning during his brachytherapy cases which results in the most precise and accurate procedure.

When he isn’t meeting with patients, developing treatment plans, or completing surgery, Dr. Bhatnagar enjoys enhancing his professional skills. He serves on the board of the Arizona Medical Association, is a consultant to the Arizona Medical Board, and is a member of the American Brachytherapy Society.

Dr. Bhatnagar regularly collaborates with urologists. He welcomes any man with prostate cancer to the Prostate Cancer Institute.
